The Imaginary Invalid

A comedy by Moliere

Argan, a fearful but miserly hyphochondriac, divides his time between summoning the doctor to care for his ills and trying not to settle the resultant bills. He resolves to marry his daughter, Angelique, to a medical student, hoping to acquire unlimited access to gratis consultation. The chosen fiance is an unattractive dolt, who would never interest Angelique, even is she were not already in love with clever, handsome Cleante, who poses as her music instructor.
Argan’s wife, however, plans to send Angelique to a convent, removing her from the line inheritance. At the urging of the sensible servant Toinette, he feigns death to test his wife’s affection only to discover her contempt. Again with the help of Toinette, the young lovers convince Argan to liberate himself from the twin tyrannies of his ailing body and his grasping physicians by becoming his own doctor.

Tehila

by Shmuel Yoseph Agnon

An adaptation to the famous story by Shmuel Yoseph Agnon, who was awarded  the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his profoundly characteristic narrative art with motifs from the life of the Jewish people”, in 1966.

This is a story which tells of a writer who is searching for the meaning in his life. After a prolonged absence he returns to Jerusalem and the reunion with the city and its inhabitants make him restless.

During his walks through the alleyways of the old city, he meets Tehila – an old pious woman who intrigues him and the two engage in conversation. He also meets other people of the city and these encounters raise questions about the relation between the past and the present and the meaning of a simple meetings between people.

When the writer coincidentally meets Tehila once more he begins to wonder whether these meetings are in fact coincidental or maybe a mysterious hand is directing their paths and maybe they have a need for one another.

Tehila’s past is revealed bit by bit and the true essence of their connection becomes clear, the core of which is redemption.

Eating

by Yaakov Shabtai

It happened after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near to my house; and I will give you for it a better vineyard than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.”

A powerful political satire, whose protagonists are Ahab and Jezebel, king and queen of Samaria, and Naboth, owner of the vineyard.

The Khan repertory theater has proven once again its ability to stage superb productions of any genre. This play is an opportunity to laugh through a stylized farce that doesn’t really need words to convey its message.
